Tidy Tools

The marriage of Duane and Narrelle was on shaky ground - and all over a messy garage! Don stepped in and helped Duane tidy up. He installed a simple tool board, along with a wall-mounted hanging rack for larger gardening tools.

1 x sheet 15mm plywood
140 x 19mm timber
90 x 45mm timber
4 x 100mm Dynabolts
galvanised nails
10mm reinforcing rod
2 x 125mm galvanised L-brackets

What to do Cut a 15mm sheet of plywood to size and apply two coats of paint to the side that will be face out. When the paint is dry, drill a hole in each corner. Hold the board in position and, through the holes, mark out the drilling points on the wall. Drill the appropriate sized holes in the wall and fix the board in place with wall plugs. Place tools against the board and mark where nails should go to hold them in place. Hammer the nails in and put the tools in place. Outline the tools with a marker pen to remind you where each one belongs, or which tool might be missing. Using a piece of 140 x 19mm timber and two L-shaped brackets fixed to the wall. Drill various sized holes through the timber to create a holder for screwdrivers and chisels. For larger tools, such as shovels, brooms and rakes, fix a length of 90 x 45mm timber to the wall using Dynabolts. Drill 10mm holes along the timber at spacings determined by (a) the width of the head of the tool you want to hang, and (b) the width of its handle. Into the holes tap some 10mm reinforcing rod approximately 150mm long, and hang the tools on the reo. (Note: 10mm reo straight bar is available from hardware building suppliers. It is usually sold in 6m lengths, but offcuts are sometimes available).
