Screwdrivers

Scott Cam, the builder from ‘Backyard Blitz’, looked at different types of screwdrivers and their uses.

Two main types

Scott explained that there are different kinds and sizes of screwdrivers for different jobs. If you choose the wrong one you may strip the screw head or damage the tip, or blade, of your screwdriver.

There are two main kinds of screwdriver: Slot Head and Phillips Head. Slot Head screwdrivers have a flat tip for slot-headed screws. Phillips Head screwdrivers have a cross-shaped tip, and are used for screws with recessed heads.

Power screwdrivers or drills save wear and tear on your wrist. They are used with interchangeable screwdriver bits, which are numbered to match corresponding numbers displayed on packets of screws (see pic).

Scott’s tips:

Choose the right screwdriver for the job.
Make sure that the head on the screwdriver fits the head on the screw. It should fit snugly into the slot or recess and cover the entire head. If it is too big you may damage the surrounding timber. If it is too small you could strip the head of the screw.
When using slot-headed screws Scott recommends that you head the screws (align the slots vertically).
When buying screwdrivers, look for the ones with magnetic tips. These are great for working on ladders or in inaccessible areas, or for picking up dropped screws.
